Frequently Asked Questions About Solar in Scotland

Frequently asked questions
Do solar panels work in Scotland?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunlight, so they work on overcast days — of which Scotland has plenty. Modern panels are efficient in diffuse light. A south-facing roof is ideal, but east- or west-facing roofs still generate a useful amount. The survey assesses your roof orientation and any shading to estimate how a system would perform on your home.
What does a solar PV system cost?
There is no single answer because the cost depends on your home and the system that suits it. The main factors are system size (kWp and number of panels), roof type and condition, battery storage capacity, inverter type, scaffolding, and the complexity of the installation. For an accurate price, we arrange a no-obligation survey at your home. See our Solar Costs guide for a full explanation of each factor.
Should I add a battery?
A battery lets you store surplus electricity generated during the day for use in the evening and overnight. Whether it makes sense depends on when you use electricity. If you are out during the day and use most of your power in the evening, a battery can help you use more of what your panels generate. The survey includes a discussion of your usage patterns to help you decide.
How does the survey work?
An installer visits your home, measures the roof, checks orientation and pitch, looks for shading, inspects your electrical setup, and discusses your usage and expectations. You then receive a written, no-obligation quote for a system tailored to your property. There is no pressure to proceed.
Is there any obligation?
No. The survey and quote are completely no-obligation. You take the quote away and decide in your own time. You only proceed if you are happy with the proposal.
Who carries out the installation?
We install through MCS-certified partners. We arrange the survey and quote, and the installation is carried out to MCS standards. MCS is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, the recognised quality mark for small-scale renewable installations in the UK.
What about VAT?
There is currently 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries until 31 March 2027. This applies to the supply and installation of qualifying equipment. Loans available, subject to status, for those who wish to spread the cost.
Can I get solar panels only, without a battery?
Yes. You can request a quote for solar panels only, solar panels with battery storage, or battery storage added to an existing solar system. The survey and quote reflect whichever option you are interested in.
Do you cover the whole of Scotland?
We arrange surveys and quotes across Scottish regions, from the Borders to the Highlands. See our Areas Covered page for the regions we serve, or send us your postcode and we will confirm availability for your area.
